University costs

The cost of providing a university education for an expatriate’s child has doubled in resent years to approximately Euro 30,000. The costs include equipment, books, travel, rent, food and other expenses.

The cost of university education is growing faster than inflation and inflation alone may double the cost of university education over the next 18 years. Students without the complete financial backing of their parents may need to work in addition to their studies to help pay for their education which can have a negative effect on their education.

UK boarding school costs

UK boarding Schools charge an inclusive Fee. This means that the price quoted to you includes your child’s education and living costs including sleeping arrangements, laundry, food and many other extra services.

There are no hidden living costs, as there are in other countries, e.g. the USA. Fees are charged per term and there are three terms in each school year, starting in September and going through to July. Preparatory School charges could be as low as GBP£3,000 - 4,000 per term. Senior School and Sixth Form range from GBP£5,500 – 9,000 per term depending on the school and its facilities.

An overseas child in a UK Boarding School will also be required to have proper Guardianship. If you live close enough to the UK for your child to return to you for half terms as well as the longer holidays or, as is sometimes the case, you are able to travel to the UK at those times to be with your child, then you will need only the absolute minimum in terms of Guardianship and then only if there is not a family member or friend who can take responsibility for your child.

Guardianship, if you do need it, includes providing a family where the child can stay for half terms and odd weekends. They will also become involved in school events if that is what you wish.

The Professional Fee for administering Guardianship varies from GBP£250 – GBP£900 each term depending on the company and the amount you wish them to do. The guardian family receives expenses on top of this. You also need to think about the cost of flights, clothing, pocket money etc.
